The Complete Beginner's Guide to Surfing the Mentawai Islands

· 8 min read

The Mentawai Islands are on every serious surfer's bucket list — and for good reason. Situated off the west coast of Sumatra, these islands produce world-class waves almost every day from April through October. But before you book your flights, here's everything you need to know.

What surf level do you need?

The Mentawais are best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. Most of the famous breaks — HT's, Bank Vaults, Telescopes — are powerful reef breaks that require solid paddling, pop-up timing, and the confidence to surf overhead surf on shallow coral.

That said, there are genuinely beginner-friendly options. Some reef breaks at low tide produce slow, forgiving waves perfect for improving. Our camps at Masokut and Nyang-Ebay are well suited for intermediate surfers still building confidence, with guides who know exactly when to paddle out and when to wait.

Our honest recommendation: you should be comfortable on waves 4–6 ft (face height) in ocean conditions before booking a Mentawai trip.

Land camp vs. boat charter: which is right for you?

There are two main ways to experience Mentawai waves: a land-based surf camp or a live-aboard boat charter.

  • Land camps (like Surf Camp Siberut) offer a home base — a comfortable room, regular meals, and the same breaks every day. They tend to be more affordable and easier to book for solo travelers or couples. You build a relationship with the water as your guides take you to the best nearby breaks by speedboat.
  • Boat charters follow the swell. You sleep on the boat, wake up at a new break, and move on. They cover more territory but cost significantly more and are not ideal if you get seasick.

For a first Mentawai trip, most people prefer the comfort and predictability of a land camp.

Health and medical preparation

The Mentawais are remote. The nearest hospital is hours away. Prepare seriously:

  • Travel insurance is non-negotiable. Make sure yours covers emergency medical evacuation.
  • Malaria prophylaxis — consult your GP. Most travelers use Doxycycline (start 2 days before arrival).
  • Reef cuts heal slowly in tropical humidity. Bring antiseptic cream, non-stick wound dressings, and sea salt for soaking.
  • Hepatitis A/B and Typhoid vaccinations are recommended.
  • Our camps carry a basic first aid kit, but bring your own personal kit with any prescription medication.

Getting there

The closest international airport is Padang (PDG) in West Sumatra. Most travelers fly in via Jakarta (CGK) or Kuala Lumpur (KUL). From Padang, take a speedboat or ferry to the Mentawai Islands — the journey to Siberut takes 3–10 hours depending on the vessel.

We arrange airport pickups and boat transfers as part of your camp package. See our Getting Here guide for full transport details.

How long should you stay?

The minimum we recommend is 7 nights. With travel time, a few flat days, and the learning curve of reading unfamiliar breaks, a week can feel short. Most guests stay 10–14 daysand leave wishing they'd booked longer.

What does it cost?

Surf Camp Siberut packages start from $760 USD per person for a 7-night stay. This includes accommodation, all meals, daily boat transfers to the breaks, and guide service. International flights are not included.
