When Is the Best Time to Surf the Mentawai Islands?
· 6 min read
The Mentawai Islands receive swell year-round, but conditions vary significantly by month. Here's our honest guide — no sugarcoating.
The short answer
April through October is the surfing season. June, July, and August deliver the most consistent overhead-to-double-overhead waves — but also the highest prices and busiest lineups. If you want quality waves with fewer crowds, April–May and September–October are the sweet spots.
Month by month breakdown
| Month | Swell | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| January | 2–4 ft | ⚪ Off-season |
| February | 2–5 ft | ⚪ Off-season |
| March | 3–5 ft | 🟡 Getting good |
| April | 4–8 ft | 🟢 Season opens |
| May | 5–8 ft | 🟢 Very good |
| June | 6–10 ft | 🔥 Peak season |
| July | 6–12 ft | 🔥 Peak season |
| August | 6–12 ft | 🔥 Peak season |
| September | 4–8 ft | 🟢 Shoulder season |
| October | 4–7 ft | 🟢 Shoulder season |
| November | 2–5 ft | 🟡 Winding down |
| December | 2–4 ft | ⚪ Off-season |
The trade-off: crowds vs. conditions
Peak season (June–August) means the best waves but also busy lineups. Popular breaks like HT's and Bank Vaults can have 20–30 surfers in the lineup during July. If you're sensitive to crowds, book for May or September when conditions are still excellent and the lineup is half as busy.
What about the off-season?
November through March is the wet season. Swells are smaller and less frequent, and rain is common. We still operate camps in this period at reduced rates — it's actually a great time for intermediate surfers who want to develop without competing for waves, or guests who want to combine surfing with cultural trips into the Mentawai interior.
Our recommendation
For most guests, we recommend May, September, or October— excellent waves, manageable crowds, and standard (not peak) pricing. If you're chasing the biggest swells and don't mind sharing breaks, go in July.
